Default Some questions to fellow Dutchmen

    Hello gentlemen!

I have a few questions; I've been shaving with a straight since January and I've been using a 'De Vergulde Hand' scheerstaaf (shaving soap bar) for the lather. I can't seem to be getting a nice, consistent lather though. Could this be because I'm doing something wrong? Or is this brand not really the best choice? If not, what do you guys recommend that is good and not too expensive (poor student, alas)?

    Thanks in advance,

    Vin

    Hi Vin,

The Vergulde Hand is indeed not the best soap for a thick, creamy lather. For myself I use a mix of Proraso cream & Trumpers: this mix doesn't dry out to fast and gives a great and smooth shaving experience.

    Succes & groet,
    Markus

Try building the lather on your face

    Hi vin
Some people swear by the vergulde hand others not. Imo there is better cheap soap on the market. for instance Cella or proraso both about €5
Or try macra root creme from the bodyshop.
For cella or proraso look for instance on this site http://www.barbieredifigaro.nl

Thanks for the tips! I'll take a look at those other soaps, and will try building the lather on my face. Ialso suspect that it might be my brush (also from the vergulde hand). i tried soaking it in water a bit longer and not shaking it off as much, and it seemed to help.

Hmmm the vergulde hand brush is not so great. Go to the Kruidvat or a other drugstore and buy a Better one. A good boar brush do you have already from €12 or €13.
invest in better stuff, then it becomes a win-win situation (soap, brush ect )

I'm a bit in two minds when it comes to boar or badger brushes... Personally, I'm dead against using fur in clothing, etc., and I don't think I can justify to myself the use of a boar or badger brush.

Please note that I do not judge others for their personal preferences, just my personal moral code by which I judge no-one but myself.

Based on my own experience with the same product: cut off a little from the soap bar (forget your straight for this!!) , put into a cup together with some water and make the lather you like.
    Enjoy!
