    Question Classicshaving.com

I am newly registered to the site, been reading the posts here and at the yahoo group for a while. Recently decided to change in my lawnmower for something different and purchased several items from classicshaving.com. While I found the site to be very helpful, I couldn't understand why they do not seem to offer honing / sharpening services right off the bat... the site specificially states, This service applies to razors which have become dull through normal use and require "routine resharpening" only.

I assumed it meant exactly what it said, but after reading some of the posts here, I get the impression that is not entirely accurate. It seems as if though I could have had them send it directly to Lynn himself before it came to me.

Not that I am completely worried, I ordered a Norton 4k/8k waterstone with the intention that I would begin the honing and stropping process once it arrives. Any thoughts on this from the other members? Did I screw this up?

They also sharpen new razors.. i got one new razor i bought there honed by Lynn (extremely sharp by the way, exellent shaver).
I also ordered a second razor a week ago wich they also sent to sharpening service (Lynn), before it is mailed to me.
I would give them a call/mail if i were you, if they didn't already send your razor they can send it to Lynn first for sharpening.
I would highly recommend you do, as honing takes a bit of practise, and that way you will also get a shave ready razor wich i think is very important. My first non-shave ready Dovo nearly killed my face. Thanks to classic and Lynn i'm now a happy straight razor shaver.

I can't find your reference on the site. Here is what it does say:

"ClassicShaving.com can now offer honing and sharpening service for New and Used straight razors regardless of brand, size, age, when, or where purchased. We are proud to have retained the exclusive services of Mr. Lynn Abrams, known far and wide as the "Honemeister" for his ability to produce the finest shaving edge possible on virtually any razor. His many years of experience in sharpening hundreds of brands and styles of razors makes him one of the world's most knowledgable craftsman of the kind. If he can't get it sharp it can't get sharp!"

I assume your reference refers to regrinding, etc.

I would send the razors out to be honed before messing with them myself. Some razors come pretty sharp though. You can strop it, test it, and see if you want to try and shave with it a little. For example, if it passes the Hanging Hair Test. But I recommend sending it out to someone. Shaving with a dull razor is dangerous.
Mailing a razor out only costs like $3 both ways, First Class so its hardly a total loss.

My guess is that they are trying to clarify they (Lynn) will sharpen any new or "normally" dull razor and NOT a complete, nicked up restoration candidate for the very reasonable fee asked.

Since the offer now includes used razors guys may try to send anything in to be sharpened not realizing that as good as Lynn is he is not a miracle worker <g>

Considering that you may know the answer to this, if I called classicshaving.com and talked to them about it, do you think that as long as I paid the appropriate fee, would they send it to Lynn for me?

As far as I know they will send ANY razor they sell to Lynn for sharpening for a very reasonable fee. It is WELL worth having it honed, especially by Lynn as you know you will have it as sharp as possible for shaving.

I really believe anyone new to this needs to start with a shave ready razor instead of learning to hone right off the bat. There is time for that later once you have worked at shaving.

I have only placed two orders at classicshaving.com. But my experience is that they are wery helpful and have great service. So my bet is that if they don't already have shipped your order and you pay the sharpening fee. I think they will send it to sharpening for you.

The disclaimer is there so Lynn doesn't receive blades with huge chunks missing or with lots of pitting around the edge. Once you hone a razor or two, you'll see how reasonable their rates are. It goes to Lynn's credit that he's able to hone a blade to such a level of sharpness and still make it worth his time.

    Default Thanks

    Lynn

I called them and they will be sending it directly to you. Thanks to everyone for their help. On a sidenote, I have read a few articles about how to do the shave properly, and the one that seemed to be the easiest to understand (and probably most comprehensive) was the one authored by Chris Moss. Anyone have any other suggestions?
