Thanked: 13245I lucked out at the last Yakima meet and took home the latest Ogalalla scent "Cedar & Sage Bay Rum" I don't quite like it as well as the "Sandalwood Bay Rum" that he also makes but both are nice diversion from the standard Bay Rum...
There are basically two distinct types of scents with the Bay Rums...
The "Cowboy style" like Ogalalla with the heavier Clove & Cinnamon notes
The "Island style" like Dominica with the lighter spices and more of the Bay Leaf scent..
There are of course combinations and variations along these two lines also, usually you will find the heavier scents tend to be the longer lasting of the variations..Last edited by gssixgun; 04-28-2013 at 05:29 PM.

Just got my order of Ogallala in and I have got to say the scent is pure manly. Came with a couple samples of cologne. After smelling the Limes and peppercorn I have to wonder how the sandalwood smells. Might be a good investment. Now to see if the lady friend likes original....
Shaving with facial hair is like a golfcourse. It's a challenge of rough and fairways. You are the skilled greenskeeper of your face?

Thanked: 21Perfect timing for this thread as I'm in the process of making my own Bay Rum after shave. Taking everything that was said into account, my base will be a good quality Russian Vodka and(if I wont drink it I wont wear it)Myers Jamaican Rum.All spice, peppercorns, grated ginger, grated orange, lemon and lime rind, a vanilla bean, and two types of cinnamon stick. Since I cant find the actual Bay leaf needed I have found the oil so that is what Ill use. Trying to think of other ingredients to add without over adding(if i havent already) then let sit for a couple of weeks even thought Im using the oil instead of leaf to really bring out the scents.
Sorry on topic; There is a local Bay Rum after shave here, Humboldt Bay Rum Aftershave and its incredible, strong scent not much for a burn but stays on for hours. Real rum in it, only down side is I wake wanting to lick my face after a shave. If anyone happens to want some I could pick it up for them.
Respectfully,
Christian

Thanked: 498This is the one scent that always eluded me. With all the great insight here, I think I need to pop for a bottle.
Thanks one and all!!!

Last week this thread really wet my appetite for a new bay rum. I ordered the Ogallala sample pack. How is it that I've never tried Ogallala before. Wow, these are some bold aftershaves. Really, really nice. BUT they are not really bay rum. They are wonderful scents but not what you'd expect for a bay rum. Great stuff. But what one will I reorder? Tough to say. The cedar and sage seems to be in front but the lime peppercorn is great too. If you haven't tried Ogallala, give the sample pack a shot. You'll be as undecided as i am.

Thanked: 0Still a noob as far as straights, but DE for a whole and love all Captain's Choice BR scents regular BR, Cat O Nine Tails(burns good) and the new Lime scent which is fantastic. Although none of them will stick around an extremely long time. Enough to finish off a great shave.

Thanked: 485I like Dominica too, I find it has a 'sweeter' smell. I like Pashana Bay Rum Hair Tonic too...

Been using Clubman's Bay Rum, which I really enjoy, but it doesn't last very long like I'd like for it to.
