    Default Newbie questions

I just got my first straight razor and have tried it twice this past week. I am using a preshave oil and cream and have a dovo blade. When I shave it is pulling and leaving a lot a hair. I was told that the blade was already honed. So could it be that my blade angle is so far off and that is why I am not getting a good shave? I realize it will take some time and practice but surprised that I am getting a better shave with my pro glide.

Also when stropping the blade, do you push it or pull it. I have seen both ways being done.

    Thanks for any help.

    Frost,

    Welcome to SRP!!

Where did you get your Dovo? If it was a brick & mortar they many times sell Dovo's as shave ready that have the factory edge. That edge is not shave ready!

On the stropping, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Here's an excellent video that should help you a lot.

Let us know on the razor origin and that'll help us give a better answer.

    Best Regards,

    Howard

That was the very brick & mortar I was referring to. The clerks, I think are told that the factory edges are shave ready. They're not!! The best thing you can do is to send your razor to a professional honer to be sharpened. Until you have that needed edge, pretty much all attempts to get a good shave are fruitless.

Here is a link to the SRP classifieds and member services. You can look through and read their posts, and you can contact them via PM (private messages) if you have questions.

Sorry, I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but it's a common occurrence with the new guys coming on the forum. Wish it were different.

    Frost,

Look at the 4th post and I actually added the link!

Also, if you add your general location in the settings, it will often times bring offers of help from members in your area.
