Thanked: 0Well, I did it!
So after many months of research, as well as using a Merkur 33 DE to get used to a single blade with multiple passes, I finally took the plunge and got my first straight!
I got an Aust razor from Straight Razor Designs/Imperial Shaving in Medina, OH, as well as a 3" Latino strop (in red, just because!)
So today I did my first shave. 10 passes on the cloth, 30 on the leather, hot towel on face after a shower, some Taylor cream with my tweezerman brush (yeah, I know, it's my next upgrade) and I went to work.
I did a 3 pass, and aside from me being acutely aware of the really damn sharp thing against my skin, and being nervous due to said fact, I don't think I did too bad!
I love the straight for lining up my chinstrap lines from the sideburns.
All I can say is that I thought I was going to like it, and I was WRONG. I LOVE it.

The only thing I want to know is how do you stand like that and not fall over? Are you an Astronaut in outer space or something?
With that razor you should get a lifetime of great shaves. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 3Good work. I remember the first time I had to take the razor over my jugular. I paused for a minute and thought I'm about to use the sharpest thing I have ever held in my hand one one of the most vulnerable spots on my body... but I'm glad I kept with it. I also was excited not to have any nicks( looks like you did well too). in my foolishness I thought maybe I'll be the first person to never draw blood with a straight razor... my cockiness lasted till the first stroke of the first pass of my next shave...

Thanked: 0Ok, so now another question:
About how many shaves, in general, assuming no major mess ups or general newbish blade abuse, before a razor needs re-honed? I know there are a LOT of variables, but in general?
