I wish I could say start with a 5/8 or even maybe a 6/8 but I started out with a 9/8 so I can't preference a 5/8.. What I can say is starting out big or small it doesn't matter as long as you start, this is a awesome art that you will be teaching yourself with plenty of help from all the fine folks right here on SRP so wether you start with a 5/8 or 10/8 enjoy the shave and the journey

I am still a newb but will offer that my razors range from 5/8 to 13/16 and all are easy enough to manage.

Truth told, I find the grind to be more of a factor than the size of the blade. I have two full hollow, three half hollow, a faux frame back and two full wedges.. The full and half hollows provide the most feedback but are also the hardest for me to manage. The heavier grinds excel for many of the reasons noted above as advantages of the larger blades. Primarily due to their ability to maintain momentum.
