Thread: Scuttle searching

Ive spent a few days on this site just sucking up as much as I could. Lather seems to be key in most of the articles Ive read. I have an old coffee mug with cheap soap from walmart in it. I have been going about the lather all wrong and Ive paid for it.....in skin and cuts. After my many swoops through this site and a few others....ive come to one conclusion. Im going to start looking for a scuttle. I found a how to make your mug work like a scuttle video and tried it. NIGHT AND DAY when it comes to shaving with cold watery soap (my first few attempts).

So if anyone (scuttle users or not) has any advice on scuttles, im all ears. Price? Size? Brand?

My first plan is to head to the local antique shop and see if they have one. Any help would be great.

A good quality soap/ cream improves the shaving experience . You need good glide..or the razor digs in results in a cut. Cella soap is not much money and is a great soap with great glide and cushion( lots of suds ). you can face lather this soap real easy. For an economy scuttle just google.....Roberts feats of clay..

I Have the scuttle that holds 6 cups of hot water with the lid. It won't win any beauty contests....but it works !!!!

+1 on the previous advice. You may not need a scuttle. Just upgrade to a higher quality shaving soap.

Picking a shaving scuttle is a matter of personal preference, but I've heard great things about Dirty Bird Pottery scuttles. That would be my first chice if I was in the market for a scuttle today.

I have an old model Georgetown Pottery scuttle. It produces very good lather too.

Anything that is water tight will work as a scuttle,play with it for awhile,you may as many do, scuttle the scuttle and face lather.
Not as romantic as the classic scuttle,but far more efficiant IMO

There are a lot of things that work. I prefer the SRD scuttle. Before that I used a moss scuttle. Before that I put a large coffee mug in a sink of hot water.

I had a similar search. Discovered and purchased the Georgetown Pottery scuttle (G20 I think). Beautiful, well-made, and functional. Gives me wonderfully warm lather for all shave passes.

+1 with the Georgetown I have a G5 & G20 love them both. I keep a puck of Pre de Provence full time in the G5 and use the G20 for all my other soaps & creams. They are certainly the most beautiful scuttles out there.

I have a G20 scuttle and it is great. I bowl lather and it is big enough to do that effectively. I also feel the raised areas in the bowl help to create lather quicker.

I have the same cobalt blue G20 and love it.
