Thread: Least expensive way to mail straight razor.

I don't know about the USPS pricing, however, I usually buy plastic toothbrush holders from the local 'cheap shop' and put the razor in them to post in a padded bag.

I agree. Those bubble envelopes are nice but they do run about $2 plus shipping... Much easier to wrap the razor in the coffin then a piece of old news paper/junk mail and into a USPS small box

Bubble wrap + a business size envelope, then ship via USPS 1st class mail -- not Priority mail -- is the cheapest way to go. I shipped my razor out earlier this year to get it professionally honed and it cost me under $3.

Technically it really depends on where you ship it from and to, since the USPS uses zones to classify addresses. Shipping to the higher zone #s cost more. A shipment to the city is cheaper than a shipment to the middle of nowhere, since they have different zone designations.

Even though a lot of guys have said that they have never had problems shipping in an envelope, one member, zib, who works for USPS says never to ship in envelopes. Apparently, envelopes (even flat, padded ones), go through high-speed processing machines which can damage the razor; he, therefore, highly suggests shipping in a box because boxes do not go through these machines. He is listed in the member services in the classifieds (Southern Honing and Restoration), and this information is listed on his page.

I've not personally shipped a razor yet, though I am probably about to send one to him for honing. YMMV.

I have had several of the padded envelopes show up torn and empty and with no insurance on them, the sender is pretty much out of luck. I have had a couple of the small flat rate boxes pretty beat up but never had a problem with the razors so long as they were bubble wrapped. Believe it or not some people just throw them in a box or envelope with out the bubble wrap and there is a better than average chance that at least the scales won't make it through the trip. For under $6 the small flat rate box is the way to go and making sure the razor is protected also.

Adding insurance is not the cheapest way to go, but it may be the smartest. You can insure the package for $100 or $200 for a small fee.
