Round Three...
Tonight's shave before bedtime - Maiden Voyage...
Pre: Shower and facial scrub with Nubian Heritage African Black Soap, Anthony Logistics Pre-Shave Oil
Soap: Pyrate Cove Bay Rhum and Lime
Brush: Semogue 2030B
Razor 1: Australian Damascus Magnetic Steel Straight
Razor .5: Merkur Futur
Post: Alum, warm rinse, Oil of Olay Toner, Shea Moisture A/S, Raw Shea Butter
Interesting shave tonight. Halfway through my first pass I decided to use my straight all the way through. The first pass went well, though I still have to remind myself never to approach my face with a horizontal razor (avoided any mishaps, though). The second pass, I did a combination of XTG and AGT, depending on what hand I was using and which stroke felt more comfortable in whichever area I was shaving. Somewhere through the second pass, I detected that the razor didn't feel as sharp as normal - or it could have been that I've never gone against the grain before and didn't know how the resistance would feel. I fumbled my way to a DFS but I can still feel it when I rub my hand AGT in some spots. It'll stay there for the next shave. My face feels very good and I won't risk any irritation. The alum barely registered, which was great. As Chicago Cub fans are wont to say, "wait 'til next time!".

Definitely. I'm letting these posts serve as a loose journal, so I'll be able to look back and see how I progress(ed). I normally shave twice a week. Since I'm trying to get the hang of things I'll have to step it up to 3 times a week, which should speed my learning.

I have so many brushes and products I haven't even opened yet! I'm trying to keep (most) everything constant while I get my technique together.

Glad to hear that the learning curve is going well for you!
Yes there is a difference of ‘feel’ when you go against or across the grain! I find it’s just part of the game!! It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s an Extra Hollow or a Near Full Wedge. However the more hollow ground the blade is the more it seems to ‘talk to you’!
Now to being able to ‘feel’ minor stubble here’s my standard counsel!!
I Do Not Believe in the Baby Butt Smooth Shave (BBS) I believe in a Close and Comfortable Shave!!!
Period!
The only one who will notice the very slight remnants of your beard is You!!
Don’t worry about the BBS, just concentrate on getting a nice and enjoyable shave!!!

Yeah, shaving with a DE taught me not to worry about a flawless shave, but rather to concentrate on a comfortable shave that is presentable. I was so pleased that I didn't have any mishaps and that I was starting to figure things out that I refused to concentrate on hair that I couldn't see.
