Hey, Keith, I purchased Tony Miller's kit and it is great. Everything you need to get started. The Dovo Special Black seems to be of fine quality, and I don't know why anyone would need more of a razor to begin with. Later,

Thanked: 0Aye, the Dovo is currently the only real razor I own. I have a zeepk from a previous bad decision, but I wouldn't let it get near my face.
I bought a barber's hone from eBay a while ago, but haven't had to use it as of yet. In a week or so I'll probably start worrying about the preparation and use of the hone, but for now I'm not too worried about it.
I'm also considering buying a Norton 4k / 8k, since they seem to be so popular among forum members for honing.

Thanks for all the great advice you guys - you've all been very helpful. I think I plan on getting the 5/8 Dovo and # 3 strop from Tony (I don't need the whole beginner kit b/c I already have a C&E best badger brush and AOS cream). As well, I will get splurge and pick up a 4k/8k Norton.
As time goes on, I guess I'll look cautiously through Ebay after I get started and/or get a blade on sale somewhere else and practice honing with that.
I'm awaiting my already ordered copy of Lynn's DVD - I am hoping it will give me a wealth of information - I also learn very well visually, so I think the DVD will be an indispensible tool.
Thanks again, guys.

Good luck Keith,
I will suggest, however, that along with your splurging on the Norton, head over to e-bay to pick up a couple of cheap razors to practice honing on. You really don't want to learn on your only shave ready razor because during the learning curve you are quite likely to reduce the quality of the edge rather than improve it.
Cheers,
Ed

Thanked: 4942Keith,
One or two is always fine and certainly great for starting out. Problem is that after a while, you want one or two of every thing out there.
Have fun.

The thing is, if you only want to do this thing for strictly utilitarian purposes I would plan on three razors initially. Two razors for switching off and a third for a backup with the ultimate goal of a 7 day set. Then don't ever come back here again and you'll be fine. If you stick around here your doomed.
