Nothing on Earth can prepare you for the delicate scent of a newly-purchased wet horsehair brush.

I have mixed baking soda and a little bit of water and made a paste. Filled the brush up as best I could. Just like you would fill a brush up to shave. Then set it in a small juice glass with hair down and let set for a couple of days. Then wash out in warm water and rinse.
Do it a second time but with shaving soap. Then wash it out and you should be fine.

Just palm lather it a couple times in the shaving soap you normally use.it will be fine, stay away from all the above potions, most of which are caustic and will have a detrimental effect on the hair.
Treat it like you would treat your own hair as it is just hair.

For a new brush I just use Glen's (gssixguns) Borax treatment and then take it in the shower with me shampoo and conditioner for the brush as well as me.
Nice part about this is the brush is clean and it has soaked up its water, quick shake (or whatever your method for removing the excess water) and you are ready to go.

Just rinsed for a few minutes and id some lather on mine.

I might be a little weird, but i really didn't mind the whole badger smell. Kind of added to the allure of using something natural like badger hair.

Wash with shampoo and then do a couple lathering cycles without putting it on your face. I haven't met a smell yet that can survive that treatment.

I just palm lather for a while, rinse under warm water, swirl against palm and so on. After a while it's gone. If it isn't gone after that it will probably be gone after a few shaves.
