Thanked: 4Thater Knot
Is there any way to get a two band Thater knot? I love my Thater brush, but I just bought a Georgetown Pottery G20 Scuttle, and the straight sides, with the bowl diameter to depth ratio I need a longer handled brush. But I don't want to give up my Thater two band. Also I've always wanted an Ivory handled brush, so if I can get just the knot I could make one. On the other hand does anybody know if Thater makes a longer handled two band brush?
Let me explain about the scuttle. The bowl has rather straight sides, to keep the lather in the bowl. It works pretty good. But with these straight side the bowl is to deep for the diameter. The handle of the brush is inside the bowl which restricts your wiping motion, and your ability to use the side of the bowl. Other then that it's a very nice scuttle. The raised ridges on the sides, and bumps on the bottom do seem to help whip up a really nice lather. And the thickness of the ceramics and the water capacity do combine to heat and keep warm the lather very nicely. I would really like this scuttle if they kept everything the same only widened it so the inner bowl was an inch bigger in diameter. However, I don't think they are going to redesign there NEW scuttle just because I don't like the dimensions. So back to getting new brush. Baring the above, are any of the Simpsons with a longer handle comparable to the Thater two band?

The only way to get a Thater knot is to remove one from the handle yourself. They don't sell knots. Maybe a retailer might be able to order one for you, you have nothing to lose in asking.
Thater knots are pretty much unique. The closest thing is a Simpson Manchurian. You might check their site I know I've seen longer handles brushes from them before. if you check out Thater's site you can view their entire line.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 4Thanks big spender. I've thought of breaking the handle off a Thater, but I really hate to have to do that. Does anyone know how the two band knot from the Golden Nib is compared to the Thater? He also has High Mountain White. The smatest thing to do would probably be to just buy another scuttle, but the G20 is so pretty in the cobalt and purple.

Honestly, I wouldn't take the knot out of the handle. I would instead ask pixel to make you a brush with the appropriate size handle, he really knows his brushes. I recommend refraining from trashing a perfectly good brush and instead getting a new one to start, or add to, your collection.

Thanked: 4Like I said, I would hate to do that, and it was just a passing thought. I will probably get a couple of knots from TGN and make my own. Thanks for the info.

Thanked: 16The TGN Finest in 28mm is a great knot at a reasonable price. I have a number of TGN Finest knots in custom handles and they are all superb, with great backbone, soft tips, and no scritch. This is all subjective, but for me the TGN Finest is at least comparable to my Thater 2-bands.
If you're inclined to spend the money, Simpson will make a custom 2-band brush in any of their handles.
