Thread: Problems With Lather

Hello, I got a Van Der Hagan boars brush and soap and was trying to build a god lather first on my face then in a very large mug, I was able to make some lather but trying to put it on my face it would go on in the first couple swirls but then seemed to vanish when I kept swirling it, seemed to go back into the brush. has this happened to anyone else and could someone please tell me what I may be doing wrong? I've been trying a couple times a day but with the same result. Please help! Lol I do have pretty hard water so that might have something to do with it

It sounds like you didn't load the brush well enough with soap before you started to build your lather.

Well I loaded it until the hairs clumped together like I saw in all the videos I watched

Why thank you pixel. Lol it was the only thing I could get at the time I am wanting to get a nice badger hair silver tip brush and this wool fat black lavender soap, but...I don't have the funds yet, sad to say

With the really hard water and low air humidity like we have here in the Southwest, what works for me is to load the brush a little more, then adding enough water for the soap so that it starts out a little "foamy." Then I build the lather by swirling it on my face (though even on top of the soap works well) without adding any more water or soap. The lather will first stop being drippy, then quickly get thicker and increase in volume. Play around with the amount of soap and water until you hit the sweet spot that works you. Good luck!

I have several brushes, from cheap to semi-spendy (80.00) My vdh boars hair works great and I end up using it more than my expensive badger hair, although it does shed a hair or two now and then. For the money they are good brushes. I have hard water and found with some soaps that I need to really use lots of soap and water to make good lather. Keep trying with different amounts of soap and water. I find it easier to use a small bowl instead of mug, more room to "swish" the brush.

The hard water issue is easy to fix, use bottled water for a few days and see what happens. You only need to get your brush wet, and to add to the soap so a small bottle will do you. You coild also try putting a lid or cover on your soap container, that way the soap will retain some of it's moisture from the previous day.

VDH can be challenging to get good lather from however it should provide enough to do the job. If you eliminate the hard water possibility then it's a matter of getting the soap-water-twirling routine right. You need to practice to get it right.
