A scuttle is a mug within a mug, sort of like how a thermos is constructed except that instead of insulating the contents of the inner vessel to keep the temperature constant, you fill the "space" between the mugs with warm water to warm the lather.

thanks . up until now I have just been letting the mug sit in hot water in the sink while I shave to keep it hot. I usually wipe the blade on a towel when shaving. again thanks

This accomplishes the same thing, and it works fine. There are some very nice scuttles out there; you can even make your own by visiting a potter's studio and taking an intro class (that's how I made mine). The design is not complex.
Can it be barbaric and civilized at the same time?

The definition of Scuttle has changed somewhat recently

The double walled "Moss" style scuttle is what most people are referring to now..

The older style Vintage scuttle is a way of moving heated water and soap to where you are shaving..

Glen, is this an example of the older style Vintage scuttle you mention? Photo is obviously looking down from above.

The scuttle in my avatar is the same type, but seen face-on.

    Yes, one of them

Many more are the Top and Bottom style sometimes called "Coal Scuttle style" which is honestly where the name came from..

I did a bit of research on them when I started collecting them, I finally stopped buying them when I ran out of room to store them

It is just another part of the hobby to get into

The one you have I have seen referred to as a "Moustache Cup" style but I am not sure if that is a correct definition...

I basically think of them all in about 4 categories

    1. Shave Mug- think old fashioned Old Spice shave mug that was designed with fins in the bottom to help hold the soap puck

    2. Lather Bowl - Think heavy Glass or Ceramic bowl that will hold heat to make lather in, say from a shave cream

    3. Vintage Scuttle - What we have just shown pics of, a two compartment scuttle that can be taken to the shaving area

    4. "Moss" style scuttle - A water jacket style bowl that can keep the lather warm can be outfitted with a "Dribble" hole to assist in making lather, to make it more useful.

That is my personal thoughts I am sure other people break them down differently

Thanks Glen, I like your classes. I did not know the name for the Modern "Moss Type Scuttle."
    Thanks!

I actually left hot water in the mug with the soap once, while I showered. The water was too hot and the glycerin soap completely dissolved. Guess the water was too hot.
