For a 20mm knot any loft over 45mm in my opinion would be not be a good idea, so if the knot is 64mm drill out 20mm and set your knot at 44mm then before you glue the knot try it out you will have a fairly good idea how you think it will perform.

I don't think its a bad idea to set a knot at any level. If its a loft you really enjoy, than there's no problem. The loft of a shaving brush is all personnel preference. I have a 20mm, 2 band shave brush I set at a 48mm loft, and I think that's the perfect loft for that knot. I also have a 20mm black badger with a 54mm loft, and it works well too. My advice is to try the loft at many different levels and see what you like. It's all personnel preference when it comes to this. There's no right or wrong answer here.

Unfortunately no. It is going to stay floppy. If you read the description of the basic silvertip, they almost make it sound like a middle of the road brush. Lesson learned. Their HMW and Super Silvertip knots are great!

A floopy knot is always a bad thing no matter what IMO.Black badger being the lowest grade (and the cheapest) can easily be set at 54mm and still perform well as it is very stiff hair,is solid hair unlike silvertip which is hollow.

I'm going to have to politely disagree with it being a bad idea. My vintage Plisson is also a floppy brush. It's a 20mm 2 band, with a 55mm loft. It never struggles to perform.

Well, I used it yesterday and it performed well. Yes, I have other brushes with more backbone but it did what is suppose to do which is to churn up a nice lather and spread it evenly around my face.

This is the brush in its final configuration. It passed the face lathering test. I wouldn't use this one for scuttle lathering. Thanks for your help in solving the case of the floppy knot!
Not floppy,,,, that brush looks like a shade tree in the Bahamas,,,,

Just playing Razorthin,,,,,,,,I actually like floppy knots & if I order one from Glen or Pixel. I ask for a high set so I can have it floppy.

I like to slap that lather all over the shave den mirror & walls,,,
