Advice needed for Shavemac purchase please!
Hello gents. I am looking for some advice on a brush purchase at Shavemac. I am looking to buy the bulb shape 26mm 437 in 3 BandSilver Tip (non-D01) and I notice that the stock loft is 61mm on it. Now if I get this brush for primarily bowl lathering do you think I should keep the loft where it is? I am worried it might be too high. I was toying with the idea of making it 58mm or so.
Any of you actually have this brush at the stock loft and how does that work for you with the non D01 3 Band Silvertip?
I should add that I want to keep it the standard silvertip as I really dislike any scritch whatsoever. I have come to prefer the softer brushes as my skin is very sensitive.
Thank you in advance for your oppinions!Last edited by Attila; 05-07-2014 at 09:12 PM.

I do not have that exact brush, but I do have a couple Shavemacs that I use for bowl lathering.
And based on that, I can say that they are a quality maker that have made just the right call on loft with mine.
To me that is.
Someone else with that brush will surely chime in and give their experience on it.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Are you thinking of modifying the brush once you get it, or is the loft customizable and they'll make it to order?
Some years back I had Bernd rebristle a vintage sterling silver handle for me, if you want I'll take measurements and let you know what I think, although it'll still largely be a guess because my knot is finest and the hair is a bit different from silvertip.

Thanks for the reply Birnando and Gugi.
I don't want to make any modifications to it and am hoping to get a correct loft set permanently on this brush. You're right though, if that knot is finest it will differ a fair bit from the silvertip. Also, whether your knot is a fan or a bulb will also make a big difference.

Indeed, and mine is a fan. However, I think you may still get something out of it, so I measured it and my loft is 48mm on a 22mm knot, three band finest, fan shaped.
My daily brush is rooney's finest 3.1 (I face lather with soaps), and compared to it the shavemac is very 'soft' (after you exclude any scritching from the tips). Here is an old picture I found which would show you how much it blooms.
Again completely different knot/loft/shape/hair, but I have the feeling may you want a little shorter loft. Everything except the bulb shape would be making the brush 'floppier' than mine, and from my experience the bulb effect isn't very strong.
I'd still wait for somebody with experience closer to the actual brush, but in the meanwhile I thought I'd offer you a zero-approximation extrapolating from mine.

Thanks, I'm not very much into heavy ornamentation (vastly prefer art-deco to art-nouveau), so this one is closer to what I like than most vintage sterling handles Currently it's got really nice patina on it too, and since I'm about to finish my first puck of soap in 7 years, I think once it's over I'll do creams for a bit and give that shavemac some playtime

Yea, that high a loft can be floppy depending on the hair type and fill. For an old two bander it would probably work. For a standard silvertip it could be iffy. I'd ask about that from shavemac.
