Thanked: 14My brother bought that kit and gave me the brush because he hated it. I though I'd like to try a boar, but it's hilariously bad. I've used it a half dozen times and it still sheds 10 hairs every use. I just got an old Ever Ready boar from my father in law and it's an amazing difference.
Get something better from Semogue or Omega. Your face will thank you!

Thanked: 3225Most issues when you start traditional wet shaving are operator errors not usually equipment failures but can be. Takes awhile to get it all sorted out. You can practice lathering without shaving too. Making an uber lather by adding cream should easily work.

In defense of the humble VDH Piggy...
I used mine as my starter before moving on to a 1800 and 1305.
But I kept my VDH as my travel brush (and that meant it got a lot of workouts) for a couple of years.
Recently it meet its end with an unfortunate run in with a hair dryer (too hot, too close, too long) when I was trying to speed up the drying so I could pack it.
Loyal and hard working to the end, seldom shed a hair...ending its service in a Hotel trash can in Atlantic City...a long way to fall.

Where are you in the US? A mentor will help you learn all you need faster than reading. Maybe you could even get one of your razors honed.

Thanked: 2I'm in Arizona. I just got my vintage Solingen delivered. Its in need of a good polishing and then a good honing. I also have a koken new charmer that's from st. Louis. That needs a full restoration. The one I used was a VSR cheapie. To be honest I was impressed. Besides my fumbling around, it cut a lot like the last barber straight razor shave I had with a full blade. Since that barber has gone to shavettes.

Thanked: 375The VDH boar brush is decent IMO (ugly handle) it will soften up over time with use. Shedding is normal, a few here a few there - eventually it should stop. If you end up liking the boar, but are curious about Badger Finest Badger would be my next purchase.
