Thread: New brush time?

I use a simple, basic Wilkinson Sword brush. Have done for years. Is it time for a change? It's started to get soft in the bristle. I've always left it stood up on end too. It still lathers ok.

Should a brush be firm? Does hanging make a difference? What bristle is best?

If the performance has dropped probably, my Omega Boar brush is much softer than when it was new but it still works great in fact better than when it was new.

The only person that can answer your questions is you. It all depends on what type of brush you like. Once a boar brush gets broken in the tips split and become softer. Some people like a stiff scratchy brush while others like a soft brush.

I think jsmith said it really, if you want a new brush get one, if you don't then don't. If your old brush still makes a good lather then you don't really need a new one.
As for hardness etc that again is more about what you want from your brush. I like a stiffer brush but others like a softer more luxurious feel. I really quite like the omega 10098 that i got a week and a bit ago, they are fairly cheap too, stinky for the first few uses though.

If it still lathers OK and is not shedding like mad I would say it is not broken. OTH if you want a new brush go for it.

I do on all my natural brushes, they seem to dry well that way. I don't hang my synthetic brush as I don't think it matters much on those.

Lots of analness about Brushes me thinks,My dad never rinsed or hung His brush,nor did my grandad.
I decided to do an Experiment with a brush I made about 8 yrs ago,handle is Gabon Ebony,Knot is a 24mm TGN grade A.
I shave at the most 3 times a week,brush has not been rinsed nor shaken out in 4 mos.Just set on the grab bar as in the pic.
Is in perfect condition to this day.

If it's a hard nose case hanging is probably appropriate. Just make sure it doesn't suffer.

It 's most important to rinse thoroughly and shake out as much water as possible. After that sitting on end up or down doesn't matter.
