If you don't want to wait, you can march down to the local Walgreens and pick up a VDH boar brush for just under $10. It will soften up within a couple weeks to a very usable, if utilitarian brush.
The easy road is rarely rewarding.

Yes, forgot about that one. If you can get it for $30 go for it because it sure isn't that price this side of the border, at least not when I bought mine in September this year. It is quite different in feel to either the Muhles or Chinese synthetic knots that I also have. It is very soft in comparison and took me a bit to start to like it because of that. I do like it now as it is nice for a change of pace.

From my experience synthetics are different yet again from either boar or badger brushes in the technique needed to be used to load and lather with them. They certainly don't need to be soaked prior to using. If you try using a very wet brush you can easily wind up with water/runny thin lather running down the brush onto your hand. You have to load with a fairly dry brush and slowly add water a bit at a time. Again you have to adjust to what the brush wants.

I'm still up in the air on a badger brush. At the price point they're in, I'm going to keep looking before I make my decision. In the meantime I ordered a Semogue 1438 boar brush. It was one of the recommended brands and the reviews I've found are quite favorable and I dig the color scheme on it. I'll take my time picking out a badger brush.

Thanks again for all the tips.

You made a great choice. Give it a month to break-in and you will be a very happy shaver.

I haven't used that model but my 1305 is quite nice. As has been said omega brushes are not bad value either. The 10098 I got is a favorite now, though it stank like wet animals when I first got it.

My Semogue arrived today along with a puck of Mitchell's Wool Fat in the dish. As I broke open the Aust already in sheer excitement, I promptly handed over the brush and soap to my wife to wrap for Christmas. The Escali will stay in use for another month until I can get to breaking in the new boar brush.
