Brush for my son
I use a Thater 4125/2 with a 26 mm knot and couldn't be happier with it. I want to get my son a brush for when he starts shaving and would like to get him something different. When I'm gone it would be redundant to have two Thaters. I'm leaning towards a two band Simpson with a 28mm knot or so. Is this a good choice? Are there better options? Thanks for your help.

I don't know enough about the brush makers. For good or bad I trust the name brand brushes. I am really tempted to buy him a Thater just because of how much I love mine but as I mentioned the Thater will probably out live me and he might like a little variety at some point.

I like Thater but I don't think a 'scritchy' Thater exists. If you want some variety, like maybe a bit of scritch, the Simpson Supers, or Manchurians, are the ticket. I think a 28mm knot might be too much of a good thing, a 26mm is better IMHO.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Oh the humility…
For about the same money, Pixel can build you a one of a kind, custom made… work of art.
But you can’t go wrong with a Simpson either.
Lifetime purchase.

You can have a custom made to suit him by any one of the brushmakers here; there are some great Elk antler brushes in Sandpoint too,,, I have a few & each is unique

Thanked: 14If your son doesn't like scritch, I'd only go Simpson if the vendor can hand-pick one for you that is perfectly soft. Otherwise, it's the luck of the draw. My Simpsons were all cherry picked for me and even then, one had a little more scritch than I cared for.
What I find to be more consistent is shavemac Finest. It's about equal to the softer expressions of Simpson Best. Not as dense but flow through and backbone are excellent (given what the hair is.) You can either build a brush using shavemac's configurator, or have a craftsman like Rudy Vey, Bob Quinn or Peter Wolf make a custom brush with a shavemac knot. Depending on the handle material and knot size you want, cost difference isn't far off from a factory standard shavemac.

A brush is an individual thing. Check the main brands like Rooney, Thater, Simpson for a combo you like. 26mm is a good middle of the road size for someone starting out.
Of course the custom guys can make exactly what you want.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
