A little advice please
Hey guys, I've purchased a couple knots, and want to install it in a handle i have.
How to remove old knot.
Are all knots the same diameter at the base.
How to install new knot.
Are they glued in some fashion.
ThanksMike

Knots can be steamed out, drilled out, or mechanically removed. Most people drill them out, steam can work but can warp wood or hollow plastic handles. You may have to do a Google search as I don't have a link handy. As far as knot diameter... If you are planning on putting a new knot in an old handle you will need to clean up the handle (remove old knot, sand, polish whatever) and them measure to see what size of know would fit. Most people order a knot just a big smaller than the opening it is going in.
Hope this helps and best of luck! The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Thanked: 4825I think Matt hit it pretty straight with the removal information. Epoxy is the common glue for setting the knots. It does not take much. Basically you are looking for just enough to cover the base of the knot, on the bottom and up on the sides a little but not enough to get into the bristles. You can test set a knot with silicone and it will last for a few shaves. The down side of doing that is the silicone is not much fun to clean out for the permanent set. I did steam a few knots on solid plastic handles and it works well for those but again, not for wood or hollow handles.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!
