Default Shaved With My First Brush, Now I'm Looking At Mugs

I sold a razor I fixed up recently, so I have a few dollars to spend on shaving stuff. My Dad has been wanting to start using a shaving brush again. I ordered a HJM (Muhle) Pure Badger and tried it with Baker Street soap. Since I liked the quality I ordered another one for my Dad (he has wanted to start using a brush again since I got him a DE).
A German made badger brush and drying stand for less than $20 seemed like a pretty good deal.

I was considering a different brush and asked the seller about the knot size. They repied "knot?." I explained what it is and how it's measured. They replied that they thought it was the "standard size".

I wanted to get us some shaving mugs/bowls next. My Dad's brush should be shipping soon, so I was looking at mugs. How would the grooved bottoms compare to the hammered finish copper bowls??

It is hard to determine the size of the traditional ceramic mugs from the pictures. Do most of them work okay with the regular short handled brushes??

    Thanks

I guess it depends on how you make your lather. If you face lather a shorter handle is not a problem as you only load the brush from the puck of soap and build the lather on your face. Oth if you bowl lather a longer handle can be useful making things a little less messy and keeping you from banging your fingers on the inside of the bowl.

When I tried bowl lathering I found a bowl of about 4-5 inches in diameter and about 3 inches deep worked fine for me. Any inexpensive cereal bowl of those dimensions should work. A rough interior surface to the bowl is said to aid in creating lather but smooth also works.

Shave mugs like the Old Spice variety are really only for loading a brush and making a lather is done in a separate bowl or on your face. A longer handle on a brush is better when these types of mugs especially as the puck wears down for the same reasons as mentioned for bowl lathering.

    I like palm bowls.
You can hold them at the right angle with comfort.
I like them about 2-2 1/2" deep and close to 4" wide at the bottom and top.
I use them to hold the puck and load the brush so I can face lather.
