Fan vs. Bulb
Is one style of brush knot better for face lathering versus bowl lathering?

I face lather exclusively. About half of my brushes are fan, and the others are bulb. At least for me, they both work equally well. Density, loft, and the type of badger hair are what are more important. I like very soft tips, yet a knot with enough backbone for face lathering, and find both with Shavemac and Thäter two-band knots.

Thanked: 351Yes, it's one of those personal preference things.... You pays your moneys and you takes your choice.
For me, though I have both, I must say I have a preference for the fan shape. I do have some bulb shape brushes I adore, but honestly, when I reach for a brush, it seems like it's always a fan shape. These days I pretty much only face lather, I'm not wasting all that nice warm rubbing action on a piece or porcelain instead of my face!
Unfortunately, it's one of those things you have to decide for yourself... soft/hard, fan/bulb, more or less splay, soft/scritchy.... everyone has their own preference, but there is no need to choose because you want to face lather or bowl lather... neither do you need to switch types for creams vs soaps... I've never owned a fan shaped brush only bulbs.
Maybe one day I'll buy a fanned shaped one just to try.
All in all..... Both will do the same thing....lather our mugs so we can shave em......lolIs it over there or over yonder?

I think we just had a discussion about this.
I think it's personal preference. I have both and honestly if I don't look I couldn't tell the difference performance wise. The fan can be a bit more sloppy with the lather. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Same, same. Personal preference. I tend to gravitate more to my silvertip 3-band bulbs.

Thanked: 1I like them both. Hard to say what my preference is. As long as the tips are soft and has a fair amount of backbone, either works.

Thanked: 3226Either work for me being a face latherer. I like soft tips and good backbone in a knot. I think I am developing a slight preference for fan shaped knots though.

Thanked: 1936I bowl lather most of the time and use either. I keep a bulb in the shower for when I am in a hurry, face lather, and use a DE. I can't tell a thing either in performance.
