    Default Boar brush funk

I have a few boar brushes and I do not recall them having a funky smell when new. Just started to break in a new Omega which smells for all the world like mothballs. Even lathering with Arko can't kill it so far. Anyone else had a new boar brush that smelt like mothballs? I am sure it will eventually depart with enough use.

I bought a new Semogue boar from SRD last year and it didn't stink, in fact it smelled rather good. However the badger I bought from brand-X razor supply had a funk to it. A couple shaves lathering with a soap concoction of Kirk's Castile and Creamo cleared the smell up.

Omega brushes have a reputation for being a bit stinky when new. Mine took about 2 weeks of daily use to get rid of the smell
What did you get, mine is a 100098 and i really like it.

    Hey Ed

I have had about 3 Omegas and this 4th one is the only one I recall that has had a smell. It is a red 10065, my 3rd one because I like them and they just accumulate like rabbits. They sure are great brushes once broken in.

When you get a Boar brush from Larry at Whipped Dog, he includes a small packet of OxyClean with instructions to mix 1/2 of it with some water and soak, then rinse and repeat with the other half. Seemed to work, but since I have tried no other samples/methods to compare with...

When i asked about mine here, i think os replied that he had had the same model and that it smelled bad for a while. I compared mine to a homeless alcoholics trousers from memory (i was guessing at the comparison ☺)

Soak in a cup of warm water and 1 oz. of white vinegar for 5-10 minutes, then shampoo in your hand with a dollop of hair shampoo. If it still smells repeat.

I shampoo all my brushes as above, about every 6 months or so.

+1 I had the same experience with my Whipped Dog. Stank like something unholy as soon as I wet it, but after a couple of soaks in the provided Oxy Clean almost all the funk was gone. I'll be using the same method on any brush I purchase in the future.
