Default problems with finest badger knot

Okay, so early in my brush making hobby i ordered a finest badger knot from Frank Shaving(yeah, i know it's not the best) because it was cheap. After realizing that i probably wouldn't have any luck selling such a poor quality brush i decided to keep it for myself. up till now i've been using a silvertip from TGN. So, first run this morning gives me a scratchy feel (scratchier than expected) plus i noticed that the lather had practically disappeared from the brush when i went for my second pass.(used the same Proraso red that i've always had good luck with). Never had that happen before.
Any chance i can improve on the knot? And where did the lather go?

If it was the brush's first use, then it just may need a few cleanings to have it lather properly. Did you use enough cream/soap?

yeah that could be. i used some of SWMBOs hair conditioner on it and gave it another try. it wasn't as bad, hopefully it will soften up some more and be usable.
