Simpson PJ2
I got this brush yesterday. The instructions state to use to and fro motions instead of circles while lathering. This contradicts everything I have heard. Lee at Lees razors confirms this and says to lather on the face. I prefer to lather in a bowl which is a super scuttle.
Does anyone have expereince with this brush, and what kind of methods do you use? It is a nice brush

It's your preference.

Not if is damaging to the brush which Simpson claims it is.

I have a PJ1 Super Badger that I have been using every day for about a year. I lather by swirling it in circles in a bowl. That is, in a circular path around the bowl, not in a twisting motion. In the time I have had it the brush has shed about 5 or 10 hairs and appears to be in great shape. It's probable that if I followed Simpson's directions the brush would last longer, but so far it seems to be tolerating my use just fine.

Thanked: 0I had originally started with the back-and-forth method, not because someone told me to but 'just because' as a total n00b I thought that was the way to do it.
Now I do some back-and-forthing and some circular rotation, which greatly improves the lathering. I had never heard this caution before though ...

I have a PJ2 Best Badger, and I use both swirling and painting strokes. No issues with either one.

Thanked: 9Yeah, I read about this warning to not swirl over on B&B. Strange, is all I can say. Really cannot see how a painting motion is better for the brush, unless we are talking some pretty serious twisting
I believe that a quality brush should thrive on both swirling and painting, and should let you choose whether to lather on the face or in a bowl (even though one method may work better than the other). Maybe Simpson is covering for slipping QC?
Cheers

I have a Simpson Polo #8 in Best and also had the instruction/warning in my box but alongside mine came an additional instruction sheet from Em's Place saying to use circular or to and fro movements. BTW, my brush is great and I use it about 85% of the time (with mostly circular movements) but the shape of the brush has always been of mediocre quality (kind of warped) I posted some concerns on B&B and SMF when I bought it around father's day. ANy probs in yours?

I think they are just covering themselves in case someone uses swirling motions while applying about 1000lbs PSI and the hairs start falling out so they can say we told you not to do that. That's like renting a 4x4 from hertz and they tell you, you can't drive off road.
