    Default A fake shavemac?

I picked up this shavemac brush at the meet up this last weekend on the PIF table. "A shavemac brush" i said to myself. "now i can see what all the hype is about." Boy am i disappointed. Then i read that there are some fakes out there but none of the links work to the article on their site. It measures about 25mm with a 55mm loft. It is soft but has no back bone and i can't seem to get it to pick up enough soap to lather well.(haven't tried it with cream yet) Is this typical or have i not given it enough learning curve?

Looks very fluffy for a Shavemac. Mine it so tightly packed it crazy. I dont know anything about fakes but it makes me wonder.

Shavemac makes brushes with a variety of knot grades available. It could be you have a genuine Shavemac with a 3 band silvertip knot installed. the way you describe it sounds typical of a 3 band silvertip badger. Most of the people that rave about the Shavemac brushes on here have one of the two types of 2 band badger knots in their brushes. The 2 banders are known for more backbone.

I don't recall any knock offs of those.

Never heard of any fake Shavemacs, but that does not necessarily prove they don’t exist.

In general, I find that Shavemacs are not floppy at all and even 3-band silvertips have more backbone than my Mühle Silvertips for example.
The (rarely ever used) leaders in floppiness in my stable are probably two Vulfix Silvertips.

Shavemac publishes a list of their badger grades.
Maybe this can give you some more information: https://www.shavemac.com/badger_qualities.html

In general, Shavemacs and Thäters are my favourites if I need a brush with some backbone in the morning.

Interesting. I've never read anything about fake Shavemacs. What are your other brushes that you are comparing it too?

There was some old post (i think on Badger and Blade) about them but the links to shavemac didn't work anymore. The other brushes i have are a Stirling soap co and a Virginia Sheng that i put in a custom handle. I think the others are right about it being one of the 3 band variety. I was able to get it to work well with some cream. It is a nice soft brush (I think i'll keep it in my collection) kind of like rubbing a bunny tail on my face.(Not that i've tried that) Maybe i'll stumble across a 2 band some day that i can try.

I enjoy Shavemacs because I can order their knots and put them in a custom handle, which I can't do with Simpson or Thäter knots. I find their 3-band Silvertip knots to be too floppy, without enough backbone for face lathering. The only exception would be a 3-band D01 knot, as the bristles are stiffer. I primarily use their 2-band Silvertip knots, which are soft with moderate backbone, or if I want more scrub, their D01 2-band Silvertip knots. That's a beautiful handle, and if it were mine, I'd order a 2-band knot and replace the one you have.

Someone could have ordered it with a high loft which would decrease backbone. Different strokes different folks. The short lofted dense brush is a relatively recent fad in shaving. A decade ago the uber soft, high lofted silvertips were the bee's knees. Now everyone wants 2-banded face scrubbers
