I yanked a synthetic knot out yesterday. I want to like them, yet don't.
Different brushes for different folks, I suppose..

YMMV dictates so much, Tom; In addition to synthetic brushes, I do not see myself at all enjoying the use of lapping films, DEs or shavettes.
Oh, and that shaving mug you you returned from the TX meet with. Egads, hell no!--Mark

Thanked: 0I've been wet shaving for about 24 years at first it was with cartridge razors and William's soap. I tried some canned goo in various brands and forms but didnt like them. I was using the boar brushes from Wally world and the drug stores. About 11 years ago i.found this site and tried some badger brushes with different soaps and creams. I notice a difference in both comfort and performance in the high end brushes. I have a Silvertips from SRD that I've had for 10 years or shows no real signs of wear or tear. So.to me it's a buy once cry once for the high end brushes.

well i sill havent found a synthetic i like. thats 4 now. i dont begrudge anyone liking them, and as my friend Bob has noted many times, they all work, its just in what you personally like. i swear Bob could lather the cheapest soap with a toothbrush and still get a perfect lather, i just dont want to learn i guess, cause i have found my favorite and untill a syn, comes along that gives me the same feel, and lathers the same, then i might like one, so far i have had 4 that were not that cheap and still didnt like. i have a syn in my shaving kit for travel cause i like the drying ability, but i find most of the time i just rub on my stick shaving cream then rub it in with my hands when on the road.
i am giving it up soon too, cause i,m going to have a shavmac stuck in my Simpsons chubby for my travel bag.“ I,m getting the impression that everyone thinks I have TIME to fix their bikes”

I do like my Shavemac. Thanks to TC and Bob for pointing it out to me and putting up with my newbie questions at the time. It's the best brush I own and the most costly. But I do like boar and synthetics also. It's about doing something different. The synthetics have some backbone but nowhere near what my Shavmac has. Some days I feel like scrubbing my ugly mug so I grab a boar. Or if I feel like enjoying the feel of the softness of a cotton ball I will use a synthetic. But if I'm testing shaving a newly hone razor its the Shavemac and MDC. A combo that can't be beaten!
And I agree. I bet Bob could use a Toothbrush and get a great shave. It's just Sharpening, right?

Some days there's just not enough spit, eh Bob.
Never tried a synthetic, or horse hair. I have a whole array of different knots, and find myself reaching for the cheapest of all of um. A black Badger that I get locally, that's under $12, placed in a candle cup that costs .75¢
I've sent quite a few of these out to fellow members, some love it, some don't.Last edited by outback; 03-12-2019 at 11:18 AM.

Gentlemen,
Synthetics have their place in traditional shaving, especially for shavers with ultra sensitive skin. For me. The Yaqi Tuxedo brushes, for instance, are joy to use for their soft face feel. Also Edwin Jagger, Muhle and some others. The Simpson Chubby 2 synthetic, my favorite of all, is a soft delight.
But then the shave den will be a desert without my beloved Wiborg 26mm White Badger. Or my Simpson super badgers. And the shavemac two-band silvertips. No love for the scrubby Simpson best badgers, though, or the spiky shavemac D01— OY!
The only boar bristle brushes that I find acceptable are the Semogue Owners Club and the 1305. As for horse hair brushes, Lord have mercy.
Then again, couple shaves with a synthetic or a boar and I can't wait to grab a Simpson super badger. I usually leave the Wiborg for the weekends. My Thaters and shavemacs are gone for now. Perhaps I should pay them another visit. I've never tried the Plisson high mountain badger — the prices scare me to death.

wont argue the softness of my Simpson chubby synthetic, its like a cloud stuck on a handle. but for me i like the scritch. my fav has been a Shavemac DO1- 2 band. That could be my biggest complaint on the synthetics, that and water retention, and just the overall feel of it when building my lather. unlike your Hollywood face Obie, i have a face thats just right for Radio!, and sometimes i need to use a wire brush just to work my MDC into this mug
