Default What is this on my mug?

What is the lip on my shaving mug used for? I think it's for when I'm draining water, the soap doesn't fall out into the sink. Am I correct?

What you have is called a mustache cup. You are supposed to drink through the hole, and the rest is to keep your mustache from getting soaked.

So you are suggesting that this is not a shaving mug, but rather a coffee mug? Hmmm, that makes sense, no wonder it sucks so bad trying to make a lather with that thing in the way. I think I'll use my U.S. constitution mug(background) now for my soap, and the mustache mug for my razors.

    Yep!

Many antiques dealers/ebay sellers confuse "mustache cup" and "shaving mug." Not sure why, but I see it all the time.

The lip on the mustache cup prevents my hand from getting in the cup to produce lather. It gets in the way.

I'm guessing relative diameter of mug against diameter of brush? I was bought an EJ brush and mug set, so the setup works well and I can build lather no problem, but outside of buying a set I guess it's possible to have a mismatch. E.g. if you get yourself one of those big silvertip badger brushes and a small coffee mug -- that just ain't gonna work.

A bit like when I try to build lather in my small Moss scuttle, not happening!

Yep, with that moustache protector in the way, your brush wil be clanking against that thing as you whip up your lather. I whip the soap real fast like if I'm making a batter or something. That produces the best thickest lather! With that cup your eventually scratch up your nice brush handle...If the brush handle or cup don't break first.

PS If you ever see the U.S civil war movie "Gettysburg" or "Gods and Generals", the officers sported great dashing moustaches back then and when they drank coffee in the mornings or lemonade at noon, they always had to wipe their moustaches (LT Col Chamberlain does it all the time).
