Thread: Cheep badger soften faster?

Hay all I bought a 30 dollar badger brush, the rocky mountain Barber one and it spikey... My dad's well used boar brush is way softer. I wonder if I can speed up the brake in period. I tried working it on a dimond stone a bit and washing it with shampoo and conditioner.
How about a belt sander gently?

If it's a low grade badger the hair is just very coarse and prickly. It may soften a bit over time but that's just the nature of those hairs. Using a belt sander or a hone will not change things except destroy the brush.

What type of badger. Black badger is about the stiffest. It too, will soften with time and use.

Just said badger. The roots are white then black band and tan tips.

Sounds like it may be course hairs. Takes time and use to soften it. My first badger was a cheapie. After a few months of use it seemed to be getting no softer. Then all of a sudden it just kinda broke in. Now the bloody thing has virtually no backbone. Good for dusting on talc.

Unlike boar, badgers do not “break in” to the same extent.
Inexpensive badgers tend to be made from “pure badger”, stiffer hair qualities and do not provide the soft, pampering feeling that silvertips are known for.

So in a nutshell: For badger there is virtually no break-in and stiff remains stiff…
And yes, a well broken-in boar brush might well be softer than a cheapo badger.


Sander and diamond stone to break a brush in?
