It appears that i'm going to be getting a scuttle for Xmas.Ok,I can live with that.My question is:how do I fill the lower chamber?Do I fill the tea kettle, and boil, and pour the water through the spout;Do I pour the water through the topor do i fill the chamber, and heat the entire contraption on the burner?
Also, how hot do I get the water? Is it suitable to have it boiling?

I fill the lower chamber with hot water. The water is hot, I microwave it, but not boiling. Then I save a small amount to pour on the soap in the top. This also fills the chamber with water that my brush has soaked up. I don't change the water, it stays hot through the entire shave. I bought my scuttle from josh earl, and wouldn't trade it. Use it every day.

I h ave a Moss scuttle, all one piece. I fill the lower chamber with hot tap water (pretty hot - I like hot water) and let it pre-heat while I'm in the shower. hen I dump that out and refill it. Then make lather, put it in the scuttle, lather up, hot towel on the face and sit for 3-4 mins while the towel does its thing and the lather heats up in the scuttle. Amazing feeling to have hot dense lather!!!! The Moss doesn't have a place for the brush, other than in the top bowl, so i use a shaving mug with hot water to soak the brush...hot water all around!

oskar, who makes the super scuttle, says to never use boiling water, as the temperature change may crack the ceramic.

Fill the inner AND outer chambers with hot water (as hot as will come from your tap...or microwave it if you don't have very hot water). Let it sit for a few minutes, dump out the water, refill only the inner chamber with hot water, then lather up.

I keep telling people not to fill the cold scuttle with boiling water. That temperature rise is too high and too sudden. Pre-warm it and fill it with hotter water then.
Take a normal mug or a cup or whatever consists of one piece, but boiling water in - no problem.
It's all about expansion. When the scuttle is cold and you pour boiling water in the brush basin, that basin will expand while the rest of the scuttle is still colder. That is when cracks can occur at the seams where the elements join.
I'm talking about my scuttles here. The risk of cracks may be smaller with the Moss Scuttle since it doesn't have that attached basin, but if the top part is attached to the main body it is probably wiser to pre-heat the Moss scuttle, too.
    Greetings
