    Default Brush Storage

What way do you guys store your brushes straight after use, when they are still damp.

When I first started wet shaving with a badger hair brush I had a brush stand which suspended the damp brush upside down and this seems to be the recommended way of doing it by the brush manufacturers.

Nowadays I merely just stand it upright and let dry naturally.

Which method do you prefer and why...?

I prefer to put my brush in a holder bristles down. After I squeeze water out.
I have read that Simpson prints out that they say to store with bristles up. I guess it's ok to store bristle up...

I like using different vintage brushes and I dry them all knot down. Makes me feel better

I hang my brushes upside down in a stand to dry. It's my understanding that this prevents water damage of the handles (for certain brushes) and also prevents water from sitting in the bottom of the knot and encouraging the growth of bacteria, mold, etc. Also, I have heard that the warranty on certain brushes can actually be voided by not drying them in this manner. Of course, I'm no brush expert and have relatively little experience so I'm probably not the best source.

I'm also interested to see what others have to say.

I've done it both ways, and I've never seen any damage done by not hanging the brush. That said, I have one stand (one of those $6.00 plastic jobs), and I hang the brush I've just used as I rotate through my modest brush collection.

I hang it bristles-down for 24 hours or so (until the next shave) and then the brush gets stood upright until its next turn in the brush rotation.

I don't think hanging them upside down will hurt in any way, and if you shake them out thoroughly there should be no problem standing them upright! After all, they made the bottom of the handle flat for a reason, didn't they?

But what is upside down? If the brush is used with the bristles down, then isn't that right side up? Or maybe that would be up side up and down side down. But it isn't sides we are discussing at all. It is ends. So I think the bristles belong down during the lathering process and then during the drying so that would be right end down, or up?

    Eh?

Bristles up means the bristles pointing up to the sky like you do with your hands when someone puts a sixgun in your back.

Thats how I dry mine but honestly I don't think it makes any difference as long as you shake out most of the water.

My 1 dollar solution to rotation and storage issues. Unused brushes can go in the back of the closet with this. I have a few stand but it saves talking about having to much shave stuff on the counter top. There can only be "one" brush in use at a time, or so I've been told by the boss.

    Kind regards,

I had a plastic stand once. I stuck it to the wall tile. The top started to bend down under the weight of the brush. I tried to straighten it out and POP! It broke. Its plastic junk. Have not used one since. I do want one though. I'm just not sure what I want. Id rather just make something. Any suggestions??
