Yeah ewanhuzarmie, that's how you use them. You do have to use the smaller shaving brushes like the Vufix 660 pure badger small brush or I use the Delux Boar bristle brush from Lee's. That way you have room to swirl up lather and store the brush in the hot water tank of the scuttle as you shave. The handle of the brush should keep the brush from falling all the way into the tank. This allows you to shake the water out, swirl up and have hot lather at each pass! You use small circles to swirl and brush any excess lather into the direction of the tank opening. Then really lather up on the face. With practice, you hardly make a mess. Small brushes are better since forcing a nice large badger brush into the tank and bending back the bristles would just be not good.

I wonder how well they'd work with creams, like Proraso?
Has anyone tried using creams in theirs?

Makes sense about lathering on the face.
I remember Grampa lathering in a mug..and that was it..No scuttle for him
