Thanked: 46scuttles vs bowls
well hello all, i'm really new to all of this and with anything manny and cool i love to learn about things like this. i dont think that im really ready for a straight razor, that just scares the daylights out of me right now, but im however underingstanding that there are many ways to even improve a safety razor shave. i know, i know boo on that. but on to my question, i have looked and tried to find out everything i can about soaps and creams. that is another subject on its own. im confused on the whole bowl and shuttle thing. please take this into account as i ask this question. im most likely going to try to go with a soap vs a cream. i like the idea that i can make what i want. so with that in mind does one have to have both a bowl and a scuttle. one or the other. or is this just what you want to use. also is one better then another or do they work better as a combo. sorry i got so many questions i really want ot be informed on this before dropping any money. i really want ot start actually increasing my shave enjoyment. again to anyone that replies thank you for your time.

Thanked: 416use which ever you like. the main purpose of a scuttle is to keep the lather warm. it has a reservoir to hold hot water under the bowl which keeps your lather warm. Its purely a preference thing. I personally use a bowl which I bought at target for a couple of bucks, but will one day probably pick up a scuttle just for fun.

Scuttle
I have an old style scuttle that I use when I have the time. I purchased it from classic shaving. The hot lather feels very good but most times I don't have the time for it. It is nice though when time isn't an issue.

Thanked: 31I've tried both, and I prefer the scuttle. I prefer it so much that I've designed and made my own just so I can have one that does what I want. Yes, scuttle for me for sure!
Try both and see what you like best and then have FUN. And don't let a straight razor freak you out, the sooner you start, the sooner you'll get better... and honestly I've found that you're not really going to cut yourself badly unless you either try to cut yourself or just really don't pay attention and start running the blade parallel along your face with pressure. You'll get nicked every once in a while, but that's not a big deal, and like I've said elsewhere: blood is just extra lubricant for the blade anyway.Last edited by maplemaker; 10-15-2008 at 12:12 PM.

I currently use both, when I have a little extra time I use the scuttle. I fill both up with hot water and let them sit for a bit to warm up then dump it out and refill the bottom then make the lather in the bowl. Mine is a 22 oz Corning ware mug from walmart for about 6 bucks and a 4in ramekin that fits just right inside it for 89 cents again at walmart. It works pretty well for a scuttle or just using the bowl

I use a Scuttle from Georgetown Pottery, and I really like it. With a mug, you can still get warm lather by leaving the mug partially submerged in warm water (like in your sink), but I found that interfered with rinsing my blade. I can leave the scuttle in the sink, put it on the sink top, or hold it in my hand; no matter where I put it, I know my lather will stay warm. It's not the end all and be all of warm lather, it's just more convenient.

I usually keep the soap in the mug and just lather on my face. I have a GP Scuttle and its a looker however the lather doesn't stay warm very long and personally isn't worth the trouble to me to heat water in a microwave for the scuttle. I like to keep things simple and easy.

Thanked: 416anyone know if scuttles are microwave safe? if so you could just heat the water while in the scuttle.
