    hay does anybody know why the old time scuttles have holes in the top bowl?

    lets the excess water drain back into the base.

    from classicshaving:

    The perforations allowed excess water to drain back into the lower chamber preventing the soap from becoming softened.

    Yes the old time scuttles are different animals from the new ones. The old ones kept the soap in the top and the brush sitting in the hole in the side and the lather was created on top. The new scuttles are really for making warm lather inside the scuttle with a water jacket around the outside.

    I thought the "new" scuttles were those mini-crockpots?
