You may want to check my post on this thread to see how I compare my brushes:
First Brush: Recommend a good Silvertip?
I have both the now discontinued Crabtree and Evelyn (C&E) small best badger and the Van der Hagen (VdH) boar brush and I like both. I think that the C&E is a better brush overall, especially if you only use creams. However, I find the VdH to be very good for harder soaps. Now that I have used a few times, it is ofter than it was initially so I am falling in love with the boar. I am still not thrilled by the shedding though. As you can see, I am not alone:
boar brush
If I could find one a bit softer than the VdH without losing its great lathering capabilities, I am convinced that would be the perfect brush for me. On the other side of things, others recommend a silvertip brush, may not be a bad idea either, if you find the right one:

I agree that my silvertip is a lLOT gentler on my face and retains more water but in my limited experience, it does not make better lather than my boar brush. My silvertip also works slower than the the best badger and the boar. Perhaps a denser silvertip would do the job with hard soaps but I have not found one with the right density and stiffness, they all seem pretty soft. Obviously, I do not know everything about brushes (far from it). I would like to hear suggestions...

For a Pure Badger I use this Vulfix: VintageĀBladesĀLLCĀ::... and I am happy with it. I do put a teaspoon or so of hot water on the soap to soften it, let it set for a few minutes. Then I dump the water from the soap into a whipping bow, shake my brush dry and load it with the softened soap and whip the lather in the bowl I dumped the water into. With that process I like the brush a lot. Yo may get different results or may not like the brush at all. Haven t had it loose a hair yet. For $25 ya can't go wrong.
