i have a mug and a scuttle just for decoration though. tried to use the mug for lathering but found it too deep so i put a couple of pucks of soap in it to raise them up to a level i could use. how do you use yours? were they used to store the soap pucks in the old days?

I keep my soap pucks in tea/sake cups that I find at the thrift store, usually found in sets of three.
(about $0.99 each) They're small enough to make loading the brush easy. I allow the puck to dry
between uses, uncovered. A selection of four to pick from at all times. Although lately, I've started
covering my tallow soap, the mouse in the house seems to be fond of it. And I bowl lather.

As to the second question, yes, most (certainly not all) SR users kept their pucks in their mugs.
But that was then and nowadays we have a lot more options on how to keep our gear.
