Thread: Buying badger/silvertip knots off eBay?

While looking for a brush, I ran across this:

Watcha think? Any experience with this product or seller? Can you recommend a better place to buy badger knots? Thanks!

Yes. The Golden N ib is the place to get good knots from.

I would suggest getting the "Super" silvertip, as they are very soft, with no scritchyness.

The regular silvertip knots are very nice for the price, but do have a bit of scritch to them.

Thanks for the endorsement! I think I'll make a choice on one of their knots today. I'm really only concerned with getting the best lather out of the brush....I suppose I'd also like the brush to work as a good exfoliant, so it seems like a little "scritch" might actually be better for this?? I don't know, this will be my first brush. Also, my hair is pretty thick, so I'm thinking a little stiffer (scritchy?) bristles might work better to lift the hair?

I bought a badger silvertip 22mm x 65mm, from the golden nib and installed it into the handle, this evening. I really like the firmness, but it seems to be able to get a better lather too, from the older one i had. Definately feels like the brush for me....definately felt like i was scrubing and exfoliating too.

I purchased an 18mm knot from them to restore and old brush that came with a scuttle I bought off ebay, just like Mac, and I couldn't be happier.

Thanks a ton fellas. I'll check the link to Mac's article for sure. After doing more research on the finer points of badger hair (pun intended) than any sane person would ever do, I decided on the best badger knot.....not just necause of the lower price. In fact many reviews gave it BETTER marks than many silvertip brushes in the lather quality, hair lifting and exflotiation categories. So I have a 24mm bb knot on the way. If at all possible I'm going to try to attach it to something cool like a chess piece or an old piece of hardware from a cabinet, car or some type of military surplus ordinance. If all else fails I'll go to the lathe. Will definately check out the link provided b4 I do anything tho! Thanks VeeDub!

You can attach that knot to pretty much anything you want really.

The only two restrictions are that you don't want to use something that would fall apart, and you have to use something that has a 24-25mm hole in it, or could be drilled for one. That's nearly an inch across.

So, large chess piece: yes, and very cool idea.

mil surpplus ordinance: no, unless you've got access to much bigger stuff that I do.

As an aside: the whole idea of a soft badger brush doing anything the actually "lift" my whiskers at least is purely wishful thinking, and an old Barber's tale in my book...
