Happy as a boy with a toy
with my new brush!
The first one that's entirely mine actually. I have been shaving with my grandfather's and other people's brushes for as long as I know. The last one I knicked from my dad some ten years ago.
That brush, a cheapish badger, had shed shed so many of its hairs, I put a bit of cord round the base a couple of years ago to tighten and stiffen the knot a bit (see pic below). Still works like a charm for me, but I can't deny I'd been ogling the gorgeous brushes one gets to see around here.
Then the other day Mummy gave me some money, and I decided maybe a new luxurious brush might be a nice thing to spend it on. She agreed. So I started comparing and reading on the various badger hair classifications and what have you.
Thought a Rooney, dense and slightly stiffer, with a relatively flat top would be the thing for me. Pondered Semogue, excellent value for money but not quite convincing esthetically. Got quite taken in by Bassguy's Madagascar ebony silver tip
- and then I saw an inconspicuous German eBay ad, and thought I might just as well give it a try. So I won an anonymous 23mm badger brush for 6 euro 50. Its only antecedents: an old price tag at DM 55,50 and the remnants of brand logo with half a crown, and the words '[cr]own' and '[D]ach[s]' (badger). I know full well that it isn't the best or prettiest brush around, but for me it's a huge upgrade and I'm happy as a coon eating watermelon.
Here are the pics (bloom is after rinsing just once, even before first use):

Sir! This is a gentlemanly forum, thus void of deliberately racist remarks. I loathe any suggestion of the contrary! In fact, it had never occurred to me that the abbreviation coon for raccoon was used as a racist pejoritive. It's only just now, specifically googling for it, that to my amazement I find coon in combination with melon and happy to be used as often as a racist caricature as an innocent locution referring to the animal.

Thanked: 137I humbly stand corrected (I think - the big words lost me somewhat). Actually, those raccoons' fur looks pretty soft. Reckon you could make a brush out of that?
Anyways, back on topic - nice brush Oldengaerde, looks like you got a good deal. How soft is it and how does it lather?
