You use the bowl of the scuttle for lathering after you have loaded your brush with soap from whatever the soap is in. The scuttle used to come without a soap holder and then he decided to include one but the soap holder doesn't require you to do anything, it's just for soaps that don't have their own bowl, such as a bulk soap like Cella (comes in a 1 kg brick). For example, I have about 10 soaps in my rotation. Some have their own bowl and others I just mill into plastic containers. Theoretically, you could order extra soap holders and lids to hold all your soaps, if you wanted to. So, if I'm using Cella, I use the soap holder, otherwise I just put it aside and load the brush from whatever container the soap is in. The same goes for creams. You load the brush however you do it and then use the bowl to lather in. By the way, my brush is a Kent BLK2, so about average, I think. The size of the brush doesn't matter. The bowl is big enough for the biggest brushes but smaller doesn't make any difference.

For about a month after I got the scuttle, I boiled water in an electric tea kettle but it was way too hot. Now, I fill the scuttle inside and also the bowl with hot tap water before I get in the shower to warm it up. Then, after my shower, I empty all the water and put more hot water just inside. I fill the brush with water and sprinkle a little in the bowl and then add more water to the brush to load it with soap. Then I mix the soapy brush in the bowl to make lather, adding a little extra water, if necessary.

The scuttle keeps the lather warm but also dries it out a little. For this reason, I add more water and mix well before each pass.
