Default 1 or 2 piece scuttle

At 31 I'm back in school, and have to do a humanities class. Well there was a beginning ceramics class that fit the bill. I will have the time, material and equipment to make a scuttle, and wanted to know do you guys find you prefer a 1 piece or 2 piece. The 2 piece would be easier to make , but I can see advantages each way.

I'm not the best person to reply to this since I only have experience with a one piece but I really like it. I guess a two piece just sounds more complicated in the sense you'd have to keep track of the extra piece. I'd be afraid it would rattle when making lather. It seems like the potential for breakage would rise. Of course these "worries" might be unfounded, since I have no real experience with a two piece. But those are some of my thoughts that led me to a one piece.

Good luck with your choice. Which ever way you go you're going to like the warm lather.

Whichever you choose you should probably make at least 2 or 30 extras.

I have a fair amount of experience with pottery and you woudln't have to worry about breaking the Dirty Bird two peice. It's high fire stoneware, you would have to drop or smash it to break it, as far as ceramic goes it's as tough as it gets.

I wish I still had my setup so I could throw some of these. Let me call a friend...

In terms of breakage I wasn't really thinking so much about the material of the item, as having to keep track of two items. Any scuttle can break. I can just see scenarios such as, go to pour out water while keeping thumb over inner bowl, and slip. Set outer bowl on sink while cleaning inner bowl. Reach for a towel and knock outer bowl on floor. That kind of thing. Just another item to keep track of.

I guess both have cons when it comes to using it like you said.

    Personally, I don't think I would want a 1-piece, but that's my preference.

Both are gonna require care since they can both break, so go with whichever you like better.

I've had both a one piece and a two piece scuttle, and I prefer my two piece scuttle. It keeps my lather warmer than my one piece, and that's why I prefer it. However, they were made by different companies, so I don't know if there are other contributing factors besides the one and two piece factor. Whatever the case, I agree that you'll enjoy the warm lather from a scuttle.

It would be nice to make one. Have fun!

My GF's sister dabbles in pottery and when I asked her, her concern about 2 piece is apparently the clay shrinks and unless you're good, having the two pieces shrink and still fit well is hard. Why don't you make a two piece, then before firing, bend the lip out on the outer piece, rest the inner piece in it, and seal it up? Doesn't seem much harder than a 2 piece, but heck I don't know beans about pottery.

I'll probably try to do one each way.
