Thread: Muhle Vs. Edwin Jagger (which is better?)

Hey Folks,

I am in a predicament, I like both of Muhle and Edwin Jagger products (As far as looks and pricing), but is there really a difference in quality. I know Muhle Started in 45' and Edwin 88' Again I am new to istraigh razors, but I would like to have something of quality in the end whether I stick to Straight Razors or not. Let me know what your thoughts are

Hey man, I think that I know just about exactly what you are talking about. And I have bought and tried a quite a bit of product from both of them, and for the most part they are very close, in fact I've thought about asking around if anyone knows if they are owned or run by the same people, some of their packaging is virtually identical except for the logos. But I would have to say that overall EJ is better. Muhle has a, what seems to be, certain type of soap available that seems a little cheaper although it may just be the appearance. And Muhle does offer, and as far as I know only one, a straight razor which I thought was rather cheap. The one that EJ offers is made by Dovo with ebony scales and is a decent quality.

I would also have to agree with you on the products being seemingly identical :S good question to ask the companies.

I definitely do like the Muhle products, their soap seems virtually identical to EJ, and I do like their cream I've got a tube of it, it is very nice and unique to me. And the EJ I think is easier to find and order in the States / online.

Ya, I got one of the apothecary mugs with the knob handle from Muhle once, it was actually smaller than I like or expected, but I do like it, it has some large protrusions in the bottom that I guess are suppose to help keep the soap from moving around when you try to work up a lather. EJ has the identical one, just different logo.

Interesting, is it too small to really want to use and would want to get a normal coffee mug? Only cause I don't think I would want to drop 45 dollars on it and find it's too small that it's not as beneficial... just curious.

Eh, it's very likely, just like many things in this prison, something that is going to have to be determined by personal preference. To me it was just a little smaller than I had expected. I did keep my eye on them at different websites, and got one when it was as low a price that I had seen and put it in with an order of other items, may have even thrown it in there to qualify for free shipping. Personally I like a lot of thick rich lather so when I am whipping up the lather / cream I kind of need plenty of room to work the brush, and I may have even been using a large brush, it would work better with a small or medium brush. And I've seen some guys who just use a very thin lather, so it probly wouldn't make a difference to those persons.
