Thanked: 11There is a - theroretical, it has never happened - possibility of the attached basin not being able to withstand a sudden gush of boiling water while the scuttle is still cold. That is why I advise buyers to preheat their scuttle first with hottish (up to 70°C) water for a couple of minutes. After that, boiling water is no issue although it is not needed. Hot tap water usually does it easy.
The above precaution regards only the S, L and XL models, not my other scuttles.
Greetings

Thanked: 2591I preheat with hot water , then refill for the shave.
I use Dirty Bird 1.5 size (the potty as I call it) and it keeps the lather nicely warm for the full shave duration.Stefan

Thanked: 6Ok, I got a few tips from Ansgar, and figured some stuff out on my own. I thought I'd share:
If you have a soap lid, drop it in so it has an air-bubble under it. Actually 'soaking' it will just make your soap cool off that much faster once its in open air. Plus your soap will last longer.
Empty the top bowl if you plan to keep your brush in there. This can be done by tipping it backwards. Water left in there will cool down pretty quickly in a cold bathroom.
Match your brush size to your scuttle. I got an LK scuttle, but my brush wasn't that big. With my new brush from Miguel, it stays a heck of a lot warmer because it fills the entire upper bowl.
Now my lather is nice and toasty!

Couldn't you have filled the chamber with water then microwaved? I've got a couple scuttles coming from another vendor and the suggestion he gave was to nuke it for approx 90 sec along with the "traditional" fill with hot water/sit/empty/refill.....

I too use a scuttle. I also enjoy HOT lather. So, I bought a $10. boiler (plastic) at target. Before showering I fill the boiler and set it to high; I preheat the scuttle with hot tap water. After the shower, dump the tap water and replace with now boiling water. Mmmmm. Hot hot lather for as many passes as I want (down to about 2 for a bbs shave).

What I noticed is if you have a metal sink (or some other 'cold feeling' working area you put the scuttle on), put something isolating underneath it. A thick plastic coaster, a piece of a plastic cutting board, whatever. I noticed a significant increase in time the scuttle stays warm. My shaving den is also my kitchen, and my working area is one of those metal 'easy clean' surfaces.
