Thread: Badger Brush Cleaning Question

I have a Geo. F. Trumper Super Badger brush (Medium). I've had this brush for about 7/8 years. I've only used GFT cream and E&C creams with it. I have never cleaned this brush other than the normal rinse after each shave.

I never really paid much attention to this before but I can now feel the soap build-up on the bristles. I read something this weekend that says that you can clean your brush in a borax solution.

Can anyone tell me how they clean their badger brushes? Also, if you use borax, tell me where you purchased it. Thanks,

Borax is available in most grocery stores & Wal-Marts on the laundry detergent aisle. Ray at ClassicShaving also sells a brush cleaning solution.

I just use shampoo. VO5 prell what ever my wife brings in. It seems to work fine.

I would assume that you simply soak the brush in the borax solution. Any tips on how long, dilution ratios, etc. Thanks in advance for any help you have and can provide.

EDIT: I'll try the shampoo route. All I'm trying to do is remove the soap build-up on the bristles. I don't have a mold issue as I take very good care of my supplies. I'll try the shampoo method this evening. I'm still going to purchase the borax or do a little shopping at Classicshaving. Thanks, Rich.

If the shampoo doesn't work, the borax soak is very simple Fill a coffee mug with enough water to immerse the bristles, add 1 teaspoon of Borax and stir. DO NOT TASTE TEST! Drop in the brush and let it soak for an hour. I usually stir the brush around a few times during the hour. Give it a good warm to hot water rinse and you are done. I notice that mine bloom more after a borax soak. Can't compare to the shampoo cause I've never done that
