I think I may have over done it. This thing is so enormous, I think I'm having trouble getting it warm.

Let me explain my previous set up:

I'd put my brush in a coffee mug, fill it and the sink, and let it sit for 5-10 while I took a shower. First pass shaving was nice and hot, second luke warm, third cold.

Now with the new scuttle, I follow the same process, except I refill the scuttle with hot water and I'm ending up with 3-4 luke-warm passes

I'm not sure if its just because my bathroom tends to a frigid 50-60 degrees, if my water is not hot enough (I just use the tap, but its hot enough to steam and cause discomfort). My brush is also quite small for this thing.

It's definitely a beautiful peace of art, but I'm thinking maybe I should have gone with a small.

Any ideas?

Could it be that you need to add more water? If that isn't possible, you might have to put some on the stove before getting in the shower. I personally don't use a scuttle, just a porcelain bowl that I float in the sink while I'm showering.

How about filling the whole sink with hot water and pop the whole thing there?

How about using just boiled water? The water I use for my shave is boiled in the kettle, put in my shave mug for a couple of minutes to take the edge off the heat and then my brush goes into it as well.

I leave the brush in the mug while I strop up and that gets the brush good and soaked, plus gets the mug nice and hot. Then I pour out most of the water and dab the brush into my GFT cream and whip up my lather with the remaining water from there. The result is a rich, thick and above all warm lather that stays hot throughout my shave.

My shave mug is black and it really does seem to soak up the heat!

So you could try using bolied water or, as per Ursus's idea, put the whole thing into a sink of water?

IIRC when the fellow first made the scuttle known on another shaving forum there was a thread with his suggestions on how to preheat the scuttle .... or maybe it was on his website ? I went with the Moss scuttle and I am happy with it but that fellow sure does some beautiful work.

I submerge my soap, brush, and scuttle in a sinkful of hot water and go about my business. When I'm ready to shave I drain the sink and scuttle then I add fresh hot water to the scuttle and lather up.

I do indeed fill the whole sink and scuttle already... Hmm. I'll tinker around with it, if I continue to have no luck, I'll see if someone wants to swap for a small.

I wrap my scuttle with a barber towel...keeps it piping hot for quite some time...

I have the Lk and the thing is huge.
First I rinse it in hot tap water to take the chill off then fill with hot tap water tipping it almost vertical to make sure that it is completely filled. Then I fill the bowl and soak my brush. After my shower I empty the scuttle and refill the water jacket again tipping it to make sure it is filled. The lather stays hot to very warm for 3 plus passes.
Try putting a coaster between the scuttle and the sink or counter. A counter at 50-60 degrees will suck the warmth from anything.

Those big ones are tough because of the heat displacement, but one thing that works in all scuttles is to ensure the lower bowl is filled with steaming hot water and put a little layer of hot water in the bottom of the top bowl. Not very much but a little. That really helps keep the brush warm and remember when you lift the brush out of the bowl, drag it on the side on the way out so most of the water stays in the bowl.
