Thread: Best brush under $300

For $300 you can get 4 (or more) of Stephen's Woodworking brushes. I have 2 and love them. Check them out at SRD.

Rooney Heritage "Victorian" The Rooney Heritage "Victorian" is a handmade brush with a lathe turned, hand polished handle in Imitation Bone. It is filled with a special grade of 100% "Super" Silvertip Badger that is unique to the Heritage range of brushes.

Overall brush height: 125mm
Handle height: 75mm
Brush Loft: 50mm
Knot diameter: 24mm





Rooney Heritage Victorian. Its tall so works well with a deeper bowl or scuttle, stiff enough for soaps, perfect for creams. Its expensive, around $175. With the money left over, I'd get a Kent BK4. Floppy? Yes, but so wonderfully soft, delicate....damn near erotic. I second the comments on the chubby...would be my 3rd (actually have one) but that would take you over the 300. The Rooney and Chubby are close enough, hence the Kent as my preference to fill out the bill. Oh, when 'bloomed' it looks twice as full.

Right now I use a 20mm Finest Extra knot from TGN on a old Made Rite handle that I got in a lot of razor that I restored. I owned a Vulfix 2235 in super before that and I got rid of it after I made my brush.

I can't imagine a brush performing any better than the brush I made.

The shaving brush is the one item I haven't gone crazy and bought every brand and variety available. Im sure I will eventually though

A lot depends on what is in the kit now and also how you use a brush.
If you do not have a sub $10.00 boar brush from CVS get one or two.

My favorite brush is a Dovo White Micarta silvertip. At the $110 I paid a bit ago I consider it an ideal badger brush. The Micarta is waterproof and if needed in ten years will justify a new knot. And it leaves room for a handful of different soaps and one nice shave ready blade in the budget. Or one matching Dovo white micarta blade...

Right there with you, brother. I'm glad somebody else likes the Kent brushes. I have a BLK12, an H12, and a BK4. My other brushes have become display items. I'd sell them off, if I could bring myself to sell any of my shaving gear.

If I was determined to blow every bit of $300 on principle, I'd buy a Plisson in horn. Just to look at, hold, and play with.

Then I'd reach for the BLK12 when it came time for a shave.
