    Default bands?

When someone refers to a brush as 2 band or 3 band, what does this mean?

The two on either end are 'two band' and the one in the middle is almost a 'three band'. Referring to the bands of color that can be seen above the handle. In general as a rule a two band will be scrubbier than a three band although I am sure there are exceptions.

You just have to be careful. Most people associate two band with ultra premium badger but often times its a matter of how the hair is cut because there are two bands that are actually three band and three band that look a lot like two. So my point is you have to be careful if you are going to grade the stuff by the number of bands. This combined with a lack of consistancy in grading and dying of hair makes going by bands alone a problem.

Usually the real premium hair like Plisson HMW and Rooney Finest have very white ends and they have a combination softness and scrubbyness regular silvertip doesn't have.

So why don't all manufacturers refer to it as Two or Three band? Is it only done by few manufacturers? It's like referencing the grade of brush-Silver tip is to Shavemac as Super badger is to Simpson? Both grades being top of line?
    Thanks

Is a Simpsons 2 Band a Simpsons Super with a shorter loft? Or is the bristle different??

To tell you the truth I would forget about the number of bands as a grading indicator. As far as I know the only companies that sell the top of the line stuff are Plisson HMW, Simpson Super, Rooney Finest. Anyone else who calls it whatever I would be skeptical of. Also the ends of the hair are very white and of course the performance is different over regular silvertip. As to why there is no standard grading in the industry probably so they can just call stuff whatever they want and rip people off who don't know.
