Can anyone offer some places to pick up badger knots for putting in old brushes (or newly turned ones)?
Also, how can you tell what size the bottom of the knot will be- the part the you'll be inserting and gluing into your handle?

This is the place where I buy my knots for brush replacement.
badger hair shaving brushes and knots, wholesale pricing
The size of the knot is the diameter of the base of the knot. Just measure the diameter of the hole and select a knot just a tiny bit smaller. You can also use a file and maybe even a small chisel to enlarge the hole slightly.
If your turning them, your best bet is to wait until you have the knot. Then you can measure the base and get a perfect fit. I have one knot that I never even glued in. The hole is a perfect fit. It seems like they all vary a little bit.
Is there any dealer other than the Golden Nib?
I just bought a wonderful silver tip bader hair knot from these folks: Fountain Pen - Antique Pen - Vintage Pen - Fountain Pen Ink - Penworks AZ
I actually bought it on eBay for 19.00 + shipping. But, it is from those folks.
Larry at whippeddog offers a selection of badger knots, also. I've never used them as I think the GN Finest is outstanding but he's great so they must be great, too.

I'm not 100% positive about this, but I believe Bernd at Shavemac sells knots. They are custom order, however.
I just got a bunch of knots from FrankShaving [iantang on eBay] and they are great, he will make any size you require.
If you need his email just PM me or email Sam@Shave-Shack.com.au
If you are ok with just a "pure" badger hair brush, Woodcraft sells 20mm pure knots for $10.25 maybe not the best but I am currently using a $5 boar brush so its a step up for me .

I have one from Larry from WhippedDog, excellent quality, and Larry is the nicest guy .
Good to know, I haven't bought them yet just on order because they were cheap and a step up from what I got
Doryferon,
You are completely right I made a beautiful brush that I hand carved and put one of those cheap knots in. Couldn't be more dissapointed with the brush. Impossible to lather at all so I'm back to using my $3 boar brush.
I wonder if I can stiffen the pure badger some how.Attachment 181284
Wet Shaving Products sells some good knots but they aren't as inexpensive as TGN.
Excellent handle, great work you done !
What a pity my shaving friend that a cheap knot overshadow your masterpiece.
A Black badger from TGN-FS will work fine but if you want pure badger TGN is the solution although the 24mm Pure knot that has now isn't as before some years
Maybe they change their provider, older knots were much better.
Thank you for the info and kind words. Ill check out getting a TGN, I learned my lesson about going the cheap route. I do feel a bit cheated though because Woodcraft had a display shaving brush that they made to demonstrate what could be done. After carefully examining theirs, it was totally different than the one I bought from them. Terrible quality compared to what I thought. Ill chalk it up to a learning lesson but justso everyone knows the $10 pure knots from woodcraft are like trying to whip up lather with a wet noodle.
A great way to stiffen an overly soft brush knot was shared with me by pixelfixed and sharptonn last year when I set my first knots a little high.
Use an o ring or shaft seal of an appropriate diameter from a hydraulic system at the base to give it some backbone. Tried it on the attached two horn attempts and it worked very well.

Same logic might apply to a soft knot. Just remember whatever you use needs to fit tight when installed, and roll it on from the bottom..
Good luck.
And as for suppliers, I purchased these from an ebay seller with good success.

Um, when I clicked on the link you provided, why does it take me to a website that supplies pen kits??
The link on mine still takes you to the ebay seller I have used without complaint thus far.
Cheers.
The problem is that some of the better knots and sellers offer knots that smell bad. Vig Shaving is the worst offender for that but they do have the sizes everyone wants. Also the boar had the same odor problem.
My brush maker tells me the LS knots are nice, sold on ebay and about the same price as the Golden Nib knots. I would suggest an extra density knot, it will have more backbone and last longer. I would prefer a denser knot rather than a higher grade of badger due to better performance over mostly visual differences.
Also, stories that it is possible to remove an old knot from the handle using steam in a pot are completely true - I tried it and it does work. However, if you use this method on a wood handle be prepared to refinish the handle before using it again. This would require a lathe and if you have a lathe and know how to use it you probably will just want to make an all new brush.
LS knots? ............
LS = LIOJUNY SHAVING PRODUCTS
Ebay store is classicshop2012
Check the left column in the store for "Brush Hair Knot", it's towards the bottom of the store catagories.

OR maybe I should have just posted Plan B: http://goo.gl/MHQjNo
I have bough many knots from him, is good.
As for Frank Shaving, Iantang is not the only one who sells in ebay from this brand
The knots that you will buy separately would be better if you buy the brush itself
I have bought from him dozens of knots, lately the majority of them won't worth nothing.
I think the sell their B' class knots separately.
So after posting this, I decided my Simpson Colonel was just shedding too much and there was no inkling it might improve, so I decided to order a replacement Extra Dense Finest Badger from the above seller on Ebay. I got the knot today and I was very impressed for the cost, it's a 2 band, very dense knot with a crown between a fan and bulb shape and the tips appear to be quite soft. I've not had a chance to install the knot yet, so the lather test remains, but from all appearances, it looks like a great knot.

Christian
And.... after attempting to do the vice thing to remove the knot, I'm gong to have to fire up the lathe and make myself a new handle for the new knot. My Simpson faux ivory just broke into 3 pieces when I attempted to pull the knot out. It was glued very securely and there was a pressure relief groove cut inside the hole for excess glue to go, I presume, and that is where it broke.
Oh well... I needed an excuse to get back to turning, and now I have one.
Christian
Gonna be a smart azz and say ya shoulda tried steaming it out. ;) No matter how you try to remove a knot I think there is always a chance that the handle goes south too. Sorry to hear there was no happy ending, so far at least. Be sure and post the handle you turn.
Bob
Well Bob, this way I didn't have to suffer through melting the handle by heating it for too long. :rofl2:
I've got 2 problems at the moment. One is that I have unsealed wood, so it's prone to issues with water and two, my shop isn't heated! Granted, it's durn near balmy warm outside for December, but turning a handle to only have water issues seems a bit of a waste of time.
I might have someone south of the border turn me up a handle and ship it here... Or I might order some faux ivory from masecraft, in which case it will arrive here at the exact same time as the -40 weather.... :aargh:
The good news is, I had two Colonel brushes, one with custom 2 band hair that I didn't like the last time I used it. Using it today was quite pleasurable, and so I might just wait until spring to turn that handle... We'll see.
Christian
The only handles I ever had a melting issue with was a hollow handled vintage Simms brush. Touch wood, all the solid handled brushes came through fine.
Yea, I think I would go the faux ivory route over wood for sure. It could be a nice springtime project.
Two band badger knots are my favourite badger knots to face lather with. Oth I have a couple of 3 banders that aren't to shabby either. Always good to have back ups.
Bob
I bought some faux Ivory sheet from Masecraft and it was quite soft...
I have never had a knot resist a Scissors/Exacto/Dremel assault. Chop off the bristles, Whittle'em down and then grind out the stump.
