Thanked: 12This is hard to do in practice; good brushes like Rooney's for instance, are dense and hand made, and more often the shedding culprits - and some may only start to shed after a few uses.
I had a one that shed for the first 6 weeks and that was long enough time to see if it was going to stop, I then got a replacement.
As to that salesman who said a brush should last a year, that's about the standard of knowledge in the AoS stores, it seems. Even a starter brush should last for a good number of years.
