Thread: Scuttle, Mug or Bowl

Scuttle, mug or bowl; which do you prefer and why.

The mug is my choice. I like the mug because it has a handle to hold on to. Although new to the straight razor, I have been using the mug, soap and brush for many years.

I think that a scuttle is cool and practical but I have never seen one that my brush would fit into.

I can say that I love my scuttle more then my mug. It heats the soap and the brush to just the right temp. It is also really cool looking. I got mine from classicshaving and had my initial put on it. It can be a handme down to my son or grandson.

I use a bowl that I got for $2 at Wal-Mart. However, I also picked up one of those desk-top mug-warmers on sale at CVS, and that does keep the lather wonderfully warm - the only problem is it's slightly too small to use the brush in effectively. I may see if I can find some stoneware I can use in the base.

So, how exactly does the scuttle work? You pour the hot water over the soap, where it goes down into the bottom to the brush?

No offense Rich, but if you can use a scuttle successfully, you are a MUCH NEATER shaver than I!!! To me, scuttles look nice, but I'll stay with my 50 cent mixing bowl!

I never said I was neat. My wife will attest to that.

I too got me a mug warmer and a flat bottom, glass bowl. The bowl bottom just fits on the warmer plate and then opens up to fit a large brush, 34mm knot Vulfix.

One word of warning about the mug warmer: it can overheat the bottom of the bowl if you are not careful. So if you ever switch from stoneware or ceramic to glass or stainless steel watch out for overheating. Words of a scary experience. I nearly ruined my new $150 brush that way.

I solved the problem by opening up the mug warmer and adding a diode in series with the heating element. That cut the power output in two and is just right for the glass bowl. Just takes a bit longer to warm up but does not overheat the bottom. I usually soak the brush on the warmer while showering and that gives it plenty of time to warm up.
